Did You Know? Saskatchewan municipalities received a 7 per cent increase in revenue sharing in the 2008-09 provincial budget, and a further 8 per cent increase was announced in April of 2008. The government is committed to developing a long-term revenue sharing agreement in consultation with municipalities. Ministry Overview Strategy and Sector Relations BranchStrategy and Sector Relations (SSR) Branch is responsible for facilitating the preparation and implementation of the Municipal Sector Strategic Plan (MSSP); fostering the provincial-municipal relationships and partnerships to plan, set priorities, and develop innovative processes for addressing municipal resource and capacity challenges; and developing the inter-governmental and strategic approaches that support local service delivery. The Branch is comprised of three areas of interest:
Municipal Sector Strategic Plan Development and Implementation The SSR branch leads the development and implementation of the MSSP. The MSSP will bring focus and structure to the municipal-provincial relationship by setting out a jointly developed and resourced plan for work that the province and municipalities need to advance to manage the challenges and opportunities affecting the sustainability of Saskatchewan and its communities. The branch will also track and report progress of the MSSP and update the Sector Plan on an annual basis. Provincial-Municipal Relations and Advisory Services The branch facilitates ministry interaction with the municipal sector in Saskatchewan . It also coordinates maintenance of the ministry’s website and ministry participation in various events, some of which include the Municipal Forums, Northern Municipal Roundtable meetings and the Saskatchewan Municipal Awards Program in partnership with municipal associations. Secondly, the Advisory Services area provides the following services to urban and rural municipal governments in southern Saskatchewan (located south of the Northern Saskatchewan Administration District): general administrative and technical advice; educational workshops (including parts of the Municipal Leadership Development Program in partnership with SUMA, SARM, SANC, UMAAS and RMAA); and technical advice regarding voluntary municipal restructuring.
