Did You Know?

From April 1, 2007 to the end of March 31, 2008, the Province of Saskatchewan received 1726 subdivision applications and approved 4251 sites. This is a 72% increase in sites approved over the 2006/07 year of 2468 sites approved.

2008 - 2009 BUDGET: $12,000,000

  • The program is jointly managed by Saskatchewan Government Services and the Ministry of Municipal Affairs.
  • A four-year phase-in of grants-in-lieu of municipal, school and library property taxes was implemented in 1998. It applied to most provincial property owned and/or managed by Government Services.
  • Grants-in-lieu are grant payments from the province to municipalities, not taxes. The province is exempt from taxes levied by local taxing authorities, but has made the decision to make grant payments for Government Services owned/managed properties.
  • For a listing of grants-in-lieu of taxes payments for the 2008-2009 fiscal year see "Related Documents".

How to apply for the Grant-in-Lieu

  • Municipalities must send a property tax notice to Saskatchewan Government Services in order to receive the grant-in-lieu. Grants-in-lieu are based on the previous year's tax notice (i.e. 2008 GIL is based on the 2007 tax notice).

Other Provincial Grants in Lieu

Some provincial Crown Corporations also pay grants in lieu or franchise fees on their properties.  Municipal Affairs is not involved in these payments and does not have information on payments to individual municipalities.

Inquiries about Crown Corporation grants in lieu or franchise fee payments should be directed to the Crown Investments Corporation or the individual Crown corporations.
