Did You Know?

From April 1, 2007 to the end of March 31, 2008, the Province of Saskatchewan received 1726 subdivision applications and approved 4251 sites. This is a 72% increase in sites approved over the 2006/07 year of 2468 sites approved.

The Federal Gas Tax Program provides approximately $147.7 million to Saskatchewan municipalities over 5 years (2005-06 to 2009-10) to help build communities in Saskatchewan.  Funding is allocated to municipalities on a per capita basis for environmentally sustainable municipal infrastructure projects and for projects that increase the capacities of communities in areas such as long term planning.  These federal funds support the environmental outcomes of cleaner air, cleaner water and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.  The New Deal Secretariat was established by the province to administer the gas tax program on behalf of the federal government.

  • Energy Conservation Advice and Assistance Available to Municipalities

The Municipal Energy Efficiency initiative of the Office of Energy Conservation (OEC) is designed to assist Saskatchewan municipalities. Under the initiative, the OEC visits a municipality and provides a detailed report highlighting potential energy efficiency lighting options, estimates their capital costs, energy savings and greenhouse gas emission reduction potential as well as provides advice on additional energy saving equipment and practices. The Saskatchewan Property Management (SPM) is also participating in this initiative by providing the full benefits of its purchasing procedures and energy conservation expertise, enabling even the smallest municipal customer to enjoy the cost savings inherent in the tendering process.

The Municipal Energy Efficiency initiative may be of interest to municipalities considering energy conserving projects under the Community Energy infrastructure category of the Gas Tax program. Further information about OEC’s initiatives is available at http://municipalities.oec.ca. OEC's reports may be submitted by a municipality as supporting documentation for certain projects under the Community Energy infrastructure category of the Gas Tax Program.
