Northern Municipal Roundtable

The Northern Municipal Roundtable (NRT) meetings were established in 1996, and are co-chaired by the Minister of Municipal Affairs, the Minister responsible for Northern Affairs, and the Chairperson of New North.

The roundtable meetings focus on northern issues and provide an opportunity for government ministries to discuss issues with northern elected officials. Ministers from other ministries are invited to the Northern Roundtable on an issue by issue basis. Northern municipalities can present their views to ministers and senior officials from various ministries, and ministers and their ministries can present issues or initiatives for discussion or information to municipal leaders.

Roundtable meeting agendas are developed through consultation with New North and other ministries. As part of a consultation strategy, renewed with New North in June 2010, Municipal Affairs, First Nations and Métis Relations, and New North will schedule two Northern Municipal Roundtable meetings annually - once in winter and once in late spring.   

Fall Meeting
Held in northern Saskatchewan with the New North Board, northern municipal leaders, and a variety of provincial ministers and officials to discuss a broad range of government policy and community issues, and to provide a forum for municipal leaders to exchange views with ministers and officials. This is a full-day meeting.

Late Spring  Meeting
Held in Regina, this NRT meeting has a similar format to the meeting in the North and is typically a half-day meeting with the New North executive and a variety of provincial ministers and officials.
