The Government of Canada has provided Public Transit Funds to support investment in public transit infrastructure in cities and communities. The Public Transit Funds are allocated to the municipalities based on ridership figures of existing public transit systems. These funds are intended to result in the environmental outcomes of cleaner air and lower greenhouse gas emissions. The Public Transit Funds are provided under the following three different arrangements:

Public Transit Capital Trust - 2008

This program provides approximately $15.1 million of federal funds to cities to assist them in supporting capital investments in public transit infrastructure.

Public Transit Capital Trust - 2007

This program provides approximately $27.2 million of federal funds to cities to assist them in supporting capital investments in public transit infrastructure.

Bilateral Agreement - 2005 - 2010

This program provides approximately $12.5 million in federal public transit funding to the seven cities with existing public transit systems.

The New Deal Secretariat administers the programs.
